10 financial advice we’d tell our younger selves

10 financial advice we’d tell our younger selves

As we look back on our financial journeys, it’s clear that the lessons through experience are some of the most profound. Isipin mo na lang kausap mo right now ang past self mo, what advice would you offer para ‘di nila maulit ang mga pagkakamali mo?

Habang nagre-reflect ka on your journey, here’s a glimpse into what the Lista Team shared they wished they had known in their younger years:

  1. “Matuto ka nang mag-ipon habang bata ka pa.”

Usually eto talaga yung unang tumatatak sa isip natin kasi mas alam na natin ngayon yung halaga ng pera. Kasi the sooner you begin, the more time your money has to grow and the easier it will be to reach your goals.

  2. “Surround yourself with friends na mindful din sa finances.”

If you know your boundaries, then good for you. Pero ibang challenge din yung pag-commit sa mga ito lalo na ‘pag may mga kasama ka na, like when you’re out with friends. So it’s better to be with people who are more aligned with your financial values because their habits and attitudes will inspire and help you stick to your financial plans.

  3. “Secure a job that you like and aligned sa’yo.

Sabi nila, “Find a job you love and the rest will be easy.” That is true, and rare. Kaya importante rin talaga to take the time with your job hunting, to ensure na nasa tamang trabaho ka na. ‘Cause when your work aligns with your passions, there’s personal fulfillment, which is a greater feeling than just collecting paychecks.

  4. “’Wag tipirin ang sarili sa pagkain.”

Don’t skimp on good food. Food is energy at mas lalong food is life! Investing in good nutrition is essential for long-term health and well-being.

  5. “Learn how to manage your stress kasi minsan dito ka pa mapapagastos.

Retail therapy ba kamo? Yes it’s fine, but to an extent! ‘Di lahat ng stressors mo sa buhay ay masosolusyunan ng paggagastos. Usually major contributor pa nga ‘yan kung bakit nade-delay yung mga financial plans mo. So handle stress in a healthy way — eat good, drink your water, exercise, do the things you love, and take the day off from work kung kakailanganin.

  6. “Mag-invest sa health. Ang hirap magkasakit.”

Connected ‘to sa advice on stress management dahil ang #1 cause of illnesses are related to stress! So take care of yourself now to prevent costly medical expenses later on. Gawin mong goal yung magkaroon ka ng disposable income to spend on the things you love, ‘di sa ospital.

  7. “Spend your savings, guilt-free. Ensure that there will be joy ‘pag nabili mo na yung napag-ipunan mo.”

Money is supposed to be spent. Kahit short o long-term ipon-ing pa ‘yan, bunga pa rin ‘yan ng pagsisikap mo. So go out and treat yourself!

  8. “It’s okay to help other people but be mindful na magtira pa rin sa sarili.”

Walang masama sa pagiging generous sa kapwa as long as may boundaries ka. Kung wala kang kayang ibigay sa kanila, it’s okay to say ‘no’.

  9. “Don’t let ‘healing your inner child’ be the major reason sa pag-spend mo on big purchases.”

Avoid using emotional reasons para ma-justify mo yung unhinged spending mo. Dapat mong matutunan balansehin ang needs at wants mo. Start creating a budget to provide you clarity and your money a purpose para ‘di ka palagi gastos lang ng gastos.

  10. “Set long-term financial goals, like a down payment for a condo or house, pati emergency fund. The milestone stuff.”

Setting targets like saving for a home or building an emergency fund can give your financial efforts direction and stability. Eto yung mga sana nasimulan na natin pag-ipunan right after we got our first paychecks. Pero okay lang ‘yan, most people learn things the hard way. At least ngayon alam mo na and that’s what’s important.

And there you go! Sana may mapulot kang aral straight from our Lista peeps! Embracing these pieces of advice can significantly impact your financial journey. And may their experiences guide you toward a brighter tomorrow marked by security and fulfillment.
