Answering the dreaded “What are your salary expectations?” question

Pro tip: You ask the question back to them!

What are your salary expectations

Usapang sweldo ulit tayo! In a previous article, we’ve tackled salary negotiations pero paano kung nasa beginning stages ka palang ng job interview process, especially when you’re asked the question, “What are your salary expectations?”

Whether you’re a fresh graduate or seasoned professional moving on from your current job, here’s how you can handle this question confidently and effectively:

Research, research, research!

Before your interview, research the average salary for the position you’re applying for. Websites like Glassdoor can provide insights into industry standards. Siyempre parte ito ng research mo as an applicant because knowing the market rate helps you set realistic expectations (and shows employers you’ve done your homework).

Know your value.

Kung may mga OJT, part-time jobs, o personal projects ka na sa tingin mo makakadagdag ng value sa’yo as an employee, then include those in your resume and the interview itself. Mas okay na yung may self-awareness ka about what you can bring to the table ‘cause it prevents the employer from undervaluing you.

Be flexible.

While it’s essential to have a number in mind, showing flexibility can make you more appealing to employers. Pwede mo naman sabihin sa mismong interview, “I’m open to discussing a fair salary based on my skills and the responsibilities of the role.”

Consider the entire package.

‘Di lang naman yung mismong sasahurin mo ang nilalaman ng pwede mong kitain from your potential employer. Factor in mo rin yung mga benefits like health insurance, bonuses, allowances, and career growth opportunities. You might say, “I’m looking for a competitive salary, but I’m also interested in the overall benefits package and career development opportunities your company offers.”

Use a range.

Providing a salary range shows that you are open to negotiation. Halimbawa, pwede mo sabihin na open ka to accepting a salary range between P30,000 to P35,000, much better kung ito ay in net income. For the interview, it can sound like this, “Based on my research and qualifications, I’m looking for a salary between P30,000 and P35,000, in net terms.”

Ask for their budget.

Kung ‘di pa rin confident sa information na dini-disclose ng potential employer mo, you can outright ask them for their budget. Try, “I’d love to know more about the salary range for this role to ensure we’re aligned.”

Stay confident.

Answering salary questions can be daunting, but maintaining confidence is key. Kaya mas maganda talaga na pina-practice mo yung sasabihin mo with a friend or relative para natural at self-assured ka on the day of the job interview.

Remember, salary negotiation is a normal but important part of the hiring process. With these tips, you’ll be better prepared to navigate this question and secure a fair compensation package that reflects your skills and potential.

May the odds be in your favor and you land your desired salary! 💪
